Regional UKMT Junior Team Challenge
On Thursday 2nd of March, Devizes School took 4 pupils from year 7, 8 and 9 to participate in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Regional Junior team Challenge.
Over the course of the day the team took part in 4 challenges, with the scores being calculated at the end. Regional challenges are held at over 65 centres in the UK and the team in first place will go on to represent the area in the national finals, in June.
The event started at 10am with the group challenge where our students had to complete a 10 question paper, with the questions varying in difficulty. Devizes School got 36/60 in this round. The next round the team took part was the cross number; a cross word type of challenge with numerical answers. In this round our team got 47/56 and by lunch our team was in the top 5 teams.
After lunch the teams had two more challenges: the shuttle and the relay. They were in pairs for both of these rounds and for the shuttle they had eight minutes to answer quick questions, before passing the answers on to the other pair. In the relay they took turns answering the questions, to see how many they could do, against the clock. For both of these rounds they got 28/60.
At the end of the day, the scores were calculated. It was announced that Devizes School had come in equal 4th out of 16 teams. Our team received a certificate and a gift at the end. Overall, it was reported to be a really enjoyable day and our students were thankful to have got the chance to take part
