THE GREAT ESCAPE!

THE DAY THE LIONS ESCAPED!

The lions made their way onto the field which is what you see here.

Have you ever came face to face with an escaped lion? This nightmare came to life for the students of Devizes School 37 years ago.
It all happened in 1980 when the lions escaped from the circus which was taking place on the green just by Devizes School. They were in school for about two or three hours and wondering about for a long time before anyone realised there was two lions in school. No one really knew how long the beasts had been roaming before they were first spotted.

There were two lions that came to Devizes School and at the time everybody was having lunch. The first lion went into Mr Turner’s classroom where some girls were having lunch, as soon as they saw the lions they ran away and the lion allegedly ate their sandwiches.  The second lion made his way to the middle school hall where lots of children was lining up to get their lunch.
They were in school for about two or three hours and wondering about for a long time before anyone realised there was two lions in school.

Everybody was very shocked because they didn’t expect to see a lion. We interviewed Mrs Vanessa Burdge who was a student here at the time: “Once the shock wore off there was a lot of panic” she said.

“There was a lot of noise which scared the lions”
One of the lions was so scared that it jumped up through the window of a classroom, which at the time was a cookery room.
“We were told to go back to our tutor rooms and stay there” says Mrs Sims who was also a student at the school
However they was both in classrooms which meant that they could be rescued. A short while later they were both darted and taken back to the circus. No one became lions prey that day thankfully!
